THE CRAFTY JELLEY BARN
 At Jelleyman's Mill

A Rather Rustic Place in a Rather Natural Environment.

Affiliated with Jelleymen's Heritage Arts Charity (JHAC)

After looking for a barn for a long time to 'do our thing', we just happened to stumble across this old building on a Steam Driven Rope Mill Heritage Site, nestled away within nature. It exceeded our expections in all respects, but it was possibly going to be demolished. The structure was a derelect 1930's Industrial engineering building, wooden frame with tin cladding. It came at the right time as we had just been made redundant, so we started work to rebuild it into a Workshop, Shop and Craft Centre. It was rotten, rusty, leaking, partially no floor, no door and windows, no electrictricity, no water and trees growing inside, not to mention the years of rubbish within!

We sourced construction materials, agricultural wood and pallets, donated or at a good price to rebuild the interior, change the exterior, and segregate the space into rooms.

Basically we rebuilt it ourselves with no contractors involved ... which was good fun and expanded those little grey cells.

After many months of 7 days a week we are where we are today .... an old Engineering building renamed The Crafty Jelley Barn. A little haven by the riverside!

Our idea was to create a peaceful place. A place you can escape to and just be yourself within nature. A non threatening, non judgement relaxing environment where you can attend individual or group workshops to express yourself creatively. A Craft Centre where all items are hand crafted in our Barn Workshop. A place where you can choose unique gifts for loved ones, or see something to keep in mind for a special event.

We like to think that we have headed in the right direction, however you can read our testimonials page to judge for yourself.

The Crafty Jelley at Jelleymans Mill, just a magical place to visit and be yourself!

I have always enjoyed art. I have never seen myself as a crafter .. more an artist who likes to experiment. My South African upbringing has had an influence on my artistic creations. I love texture and creating artistic illusions. and I am really inspired by sensory techniques, and work with different mediums.

Art & Craft is my escapism and therapy. Like many others I have suffered loss in my life and have to battle depression. My dearest friend Mark wanted a rag rug, so we made a loom and subsequently his rug. This set me off on my therapeutic journey of  discovery. Many of my workshop attendees have also benefitted in this place of sanctuary. I am always experimenting and creating, and I love peoples reactions when they see my latest items., and also items they have made themselves!

I love it here, as do all that visit often. It is the Healing Power of Nature & Art.

Outside has always been my passion, whether it be walking, bouldering or climbing, motorcycling, kayaking or mountain biking. It always seems to involve get wet, cold and dirty, which actually doesn’t bother me. In all of these however, I relish the thought of being out in nature, and I absorb it all! It’s a far cry from Corporate Finance & Training in a black suit that took over my whole life!

Being a ‘woodsman’ sort of person, the Barn project opportunity  came along just as we were made redundant from managing an engineering factory. I jumped right into building work and put my (part time) interior design and construction head on. As a hobby I’ve done a few building reburbs in my time.

Now I just love being at The Crafty Jelley. It inspires my creative side, and I have started writing my Wroodles book again, to be published in 2025. Project ideas just flow.

Come along, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and feel inspired yourself!
